BELLE DE JOUR POWER PLANNER 2014 : CONTENTS AND REVIEW

Do you love to scribble notes? Admittedly, I am the type of person that will create a checklist in the morning and take joy in ticking them off one by one.

Ever since I started working, I was on the lookout for that perfect planner (at least for me). Before, I would line up at a coffee shop for stamps. Planner from coffee houses are nice but it's not "that" me, if you know what I mean.

Then, a friend introduced me to Belle de Jour planner. Since 2009, the love affair continues. You may have noticed some relevant posts on this blog about this awesome planner:

BDJ 2013 PLANNER : A CLOSER LOOK  (Click HERE) | 2012 Belle de Jour Planner (Click HERE) | BELLE DE JOUR (BDJ) FAIR 2012  (Click HERE)

Let's meet Belle on our BELLE DE JOUR POWER PLANNER 2014

A Cover as Vibrant as Your Lifestyle
The Aztec prints and colorful fonts will definitely make you write more often! Overall design is so BDJ. The brand's creative team knows their job quite well. Like last years, they offer different covers. They have leather type, spring and this one. Having a sticky feature syndrome, I opt for the same finish.

TIP: Remove all the coupons in one go and put it on a transparent plastic. It will remove the bulkiness of the planner by 30%, making it portable and bag-friendly.

Stickers and BDJ Card
To tell you honestly, I haven't used my BDJ 2013 card to date, so I'm indifferent whether this is useful to me. However, it being an eye candy makes a posh ruler or wallet decor if you like :) It's such a downer when I've been told that the notepads are now for sale (last 2011 they are free) - but it is what it is. Instead, I appreciate that they have free stickers now. They are so cute (for lack of the better, sufficient term).

TIP: BDJ has a monthly calendar view, right? Put stickers on extra special dates, for more emphasis. ☺ You won't forget your loved one's birthday again!

Let's check other exciting stuff to behold after the jump!

SHU UEMURA EYELASH CURLER REVIEW

There are some things you have to spend (a bit) much to get quality results. One of those are eye lash curlers. You see, I have undergone a LASIK Surgery last 2012 (more on that HERE), that is why I take eye products seriously. Though I got a heads up from my eye doctors that I am free to resume my normal lifestyle, I guess it wouldn't hurt to take extra care of our peepers.

One of my lovely friends (Heya Mamey Annie) went to Japan just recently. Knowing that the prices are more affordable there than PH, I asked her a favor to please buy me an eyelash curler. I first saw this when I got to attend a Kiss and Makeup Workshop at Shu Uemura last year.

DETAILS:
Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler
Cost: About Php 600 in Japan (Php 1,000 in Manila)
Contents: Curler and one extra silicone refill pad
Available Colors: Gold and White Gold

♣ Tip: Curl your lashes first before applying mascara :)

Why are they important, again?
Sure, it's not a matter of life and death, but learning to curl your eyelashes is the quickest and easiest way to make your lashes look fuller and thicker. Some of us were born with a natural curl to our lashes, but for those of us who were born with straight or limp eyelashes, reaching for an eyelash curler is a necessity. A good eyelash curler instantly lifts eyes and makes them appear more open. (Source).

TOP 3 WEEKEND IDEAS : MAXIE THE MUSICALE, KALOOBAN AND READER CONFERENCE

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE STRESSED THE WHOLE WEEK ALERT! If you  are like many who are tired with the usual movie, eat out and mall type of hang outs, then you are in for a treat! I have compiled 3 weekend ideas that are out of the box. I will always love eating and shopping, of course coffee chat is on top of my weekend list too. It's just that there are times that I want to try something different. And something different we have here. Before we jump in, let me share with you my thoughts on why these activities are worth your time and buck:

♣ Your eyes deserve a break. Admit it. It's not everyday that we can feast our eyes on creative sights. Studies show that people who are exposed to "creative" stuff tend to be more smart and madiskarte
♣ How well do you know yourself? And by "yourself" I mean your culture?I heard an elderly said: "Kaya ligaw ang bayan na ito ay dahil hindi natin kilala ang sarili natin."
♣ Have a good and relaxing time. Sure, you can do that too by watching a movie, but don't you feel an excitement to watch a play with the actors acting in the flesh (read: without cut).

KALOOBAN: Oneness of the Filipino Soul in Dance
This will be shown on November 9 and 10 (Sat and Sun) and will be held at Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). If you are familiar with SM Mall of Asia, getting at CCP will be an easy peasy. Tickets range from as high as Php 2,000 to as affordable as Php 200. Show will run for 2 hours approximately. If you are craving to see our country's long forgotten dances, you should not miss this! More details HERE.

Filipino Reader Conference 2013
Okay, let's remove the stigma of book lovers being all nerdy and dorky. Natalie Portman is a wide reader. Same with Gerald Butler (who's a lawyer, by the way). With these celebrities as showcases, we have no excuse not to love reading. It's nice to have a book in your hand every once so often. This event is a celebration of us loving to read anything that interests us. No limits!

The 3rd Filipino Reader Con: What Do Readers Want? is happening on November 9, 2013, at Rizal Library in Ateneo de Manila University. PS: I will be there as one of the book bloggers representative. Please tweet me (@callmekristine) and say HI when you got a chance :)

MONEY MATTERS : HOW CAN I KNOW IF A #PSEi STOCK PAYS DIVIDENDS?

Hello Charmaine! Thank you for writing this note. I really appreciate how persistent you are. I noticed you have sent me an email plus a follow-up comment too! ☺ And a BIG cheer for opening an online investment account coupled with an attendance to their EIP seminar! I won't be surprised if years down the line, you'll be earning big time through investing!

Let's answer those questions upfront but first some nuggets about dividends:

♣ Dividends are paid when companies incur earnings (simply put: when business is doing good, stockholders have bonus via dividends).
♣ Dividends are generally not guaranteed. While there are stocks with sure dividends, majority are upon Company's discretion.
♣ Dividends can be cash or stocks (additional shares). Dividends are computed based on this formula. Cash Dividend = Cash Dividends per Share x No. of shares you own.

To know if companies give dividends, you may look at their dividend record on previous years. In COL Financial, you can click on Quotes Tab > Stock (enter the code for your stock of choice) then click on "Dividends" tab. Take for example PLDT stock below (stock code: TEL)

While still, past performance is not a 100% guarantee of dividend declaration, there's a likelihood that a company will give out dividends specially if it's consistent the past years.

Tip: If you are not familiar with stock codes, you can either search it on Google or click on the Stock List (just above the News and Valuations text on the screen shot).

CMK SWEATS : 5 HAPPY THOUGHTS TO BOOST YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY

Let's face it: There are days when we feel blah on our quest to a healthier body. That some days we ask "why am I doing this again?!" a couple of times! A far fetched cry from the happily sexy lady wiggling her drool worthy arms with no trace of sweat at all. News Flash: The way to fitness is not all glory. There will be times that we may feel like a pig and want to skip all the dirty work. BUT: We've come this far to give up. And since our body is a limited edition, we should INVEST our time and effort to make it better. I've compiled my

TOP 5 HAPPY THOUGHTS TO KEEP ME GOING
AND GOING (yes, like that Energizer bunny!). On your mark, set... fire!

FITNESS MAGAZINES
Oh bless the publishing house of Women's Health magazines. It's such an ego boost to know that you're not alone with this journey. That while it may take quite some time for you to pull up your tank and showcase your flat abs (ugh), the inspiration keeps you going. My favorite part is the You lose. You win portion. It showcased real people who fought and triumphed their battle against unhealthy living. Not only did they shed unwanted flabs, they also felt lighter and energized. Clothes, food and fitness routine ideas? This got you covered.

TIP: You don't need to pay for so much. There are always back issues that are sold for 75% off (depending on the dates). Befriend your magazine sales lady and you'll be surprised how cheap back issue magazines can get. There's one at Filbars or my favorite: Landmark Makati magazine stall (forgot the name, but it's near Guess Jeans booth).

POWER OF TEA
I am not an avid fan of tea, but lately I recognized its benefits. I noticed I sleep more soundly (Thank you Agnes for Sunrider Calli Calming Tea ☺) and I tend to flush out all the oils and whatever toxins I've ingested. I am totally clueless on what tea to take, if you're like me start with the simple ones. I once asked the lady from Healthy Options why teas are so tasteless. She candidly replied, "Ah, it's because they are only dried leaves in general.." (Makes perfect sense).

TIP: For starters, you may want to give CBTL's Moroccan Mint Tea a shot. It's a fusion of tea and chocolate, you'll hardly notice the tea part. After that, I think you'll appreciate teas more. Of course for more posh ambiance, why don't you invite your girls for an afternoon tea convo at TWG Greenbelt 5. HERE's some review, if you will.

FRUITS AND NUTS
The only fruits and nuts I knew of before was it was a flavor of Cadbury chocolate ☺ Now, thanks to Maya she introduced me to a pantawid gutom combination. I always eat M&M whenever I'm outside and hungry. And so, this is a perfect alternative! Nuts always make me feel full. In the interest of full disclosure, the Tong Garden is costlier than average. It retails for Php 190. It's cheaper in Malaysia, but considering the airfare, it's cheaper to buy here. #NoBrainer ☺

MONEY MATTERS : BRIGHTER LIFE PERSONAL FINANCE SERIES

One of the best investments that you can have is your knowledge on how things work. People are usually afraid of the unknown. With this in mind, I have made it a point for 2013 to be a year of financial literacy.

I have read materials and blogs, engaged in one on one conversations, attended conferences and by far, the biggest leap I jumped into was to enroll myself at Registered Financial Planner Institute (which by the way has a few thousand worth of tuition fee).

As I continue to tick my keyboard now, I reckoned: Is it worth it? In all honestly, I can say it is. Instead of a measly 1% earning (from savings account), I now invested into mutual funds, UITF and stocks. And as much as I fear that I may be tagged as "weird", I'm loving the whole process. So much so that MONEY MATTERS series was born.

It may interesting to know that BRIGHTER LIFE series is on going (more like weekly) and it is free. Each event highlights a specific topic. One that we've attended is Personal Finance for the Self-Employed. If you're still testing the waters, this is a good start for you.

Some few take-aways from my notes:
♣ Good cash flow is important.
♣ If you do a really good job, profits will follow; but it's nicer to know your numbers.
♣ List all your money-in and money-out, check if the ins are more than the outs.
♣ Investing is behavioral.

There should be a mind-shift.
Actual Mindset: Spending is sexy. Saving is baduy.
Should Be Mindset: {Over} Spending is baduy. Saving is sexy!

Why is it a good time to invest NOW?
♠ Inflation continues to be low (think: rates are favorable).
♠ There's a high confidence in Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
♠ It's also a good time to be an entrepreneur and investor.

Before you invest...
1. improve your cash flow. |2. get out of debt.
3. save up for your emergency fund (3 months worth of your expenses).
4. get protected from life's risks. | 5. concentrate in investing for long term.

SCRIBBLED NOTES #17: HOW SHOULD ONE MOVE ON?

"Ano ang gagawin mo pag may pangarap na nasira?
Be it death of a loved one, relationships, dreams."

DO what you could to keep what you love.
Why? So you won't be filled by what-ifs and regrets.
LET GO and MOVE ON
When you lose what {or who} you love inspite of your efforts to keep it... let go.
Every second focused on yesterday is stolen from today.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead... (Philippians 3:13)
♣ What do you want? DO what you can when you STILL have time.
May panahon ang mga bagay-bagay.
ACCEPT what you cannot change.
Everyday we get wounded but why focus on the pain.
The same heat that melts the wax hardens the clay.
Accept FOR NOW what you cannot change FOR NOW.
Do not fight with your reality para lumuwag ang buhay mo.
Do not contend with what is "given" {think math}.
Mahirap ang laging nakikipaglaban sa mga bagay na wala kang magagawa.

HOW SHOULD ONE MOVE ON?

CAMARU NATURALS AMAZONIAN CLAY FACE MASK REVIEW

Humans are going back to nature. Gone are the days when we love all things chemically packed. New age speaks of using what's already there, what's natural. That's a good leap, I think. Our product for today is a classic example of loving what's natural. Weeks ago, I received a package that contains a face mask with a color, uhm, charcoal black that is, countless times I sniffed and thought if I should give it a try, I guess I'm glad I did.

DETAILS:
CAMARU NATURALS AMAZONIAN CLAY FACE MASK
Size: 50 grams | Price: Php 429 |Available at EchoStore,
Sugarleaf and Velvet Rose | Follow them on Twitter @CamaruNaturals

The Application.
So, last minute I am still contemplating since I'm afraid to explore so much in terms of facial products. I read the material and sniffed it a bit more. Then I said, GO! Substance feels like a common mask, it takes a little amount of time to dry and clasp on your skin. In my case, I have to endure my brother's laugh trip while taking my "selfie" for this review.

Directions for Use: Wash your face, pat skin dry, apply mask avoiding the eye area and leave for 10 - 15 minutes. TIP: Put the tub on the fridge for an hour before use. It will give you a cool sensation and lessen the weird smell.

Camaru Naturals Promise.
Mask is specially formulated to protect the face from problems that result from everyday life. It works to cleanse, tone, nurture and renew the skin to regain and retain your skin's natural renewal process for smoother, more radiant, healthy and younger-looking skin. (Source: Camaru Material). Let's see my canvass sans the mask!

CMK READS : PROTIPS, REFRESHMENT FOR THE RACE by MALOI SALUMBIDES

This is one of the books I have purchased from the recent MIBF Book Fair (HERE). I've always heard of Ate Maloi as she's one of the main stay at DZAS. Her mahinhin voice is so distinct along with her tips commonly known as PROTIPS (or positive tips).

PROTIPS books are known to boost one's encouragement and productivity at work. It aims to kindle the fire on your career life. It has a series and this is one of those. Book retails at Php 220 on all major bookstores. Here are my 3 favorite chunks from the book:

LEARN TO LAUGH
Most, if not all, companies have good and challenging times. What do you do when the going gets tough? She suggest to have a few good laugh. Learn from your mistakes and realize that you are too blessed to be stressed. Give yourself some breathing space. Inhale, get a good cup of coffee and maybe watch a laughable video, if you can. For all you know, these simple things are your only ticket towards sanity.

MULTI VS. MONO-TASKING
Now, this is an interesting topic. Emerging studies conclude that there's no such thing as multi-tasking. That the brain can use its fullest potential one action item at a time. Being burdened with so much to-do's at once is a sure-fire way to be burned out. There's so much to do but it's our duty to know which are important and which are urgent. More on Tyranny of the Urgent, HERE. Everyone has 24 hours a day, it's up to us whether to use it productively while being happy and sane outside our office building.

CMK TRAVELS : TOP 8 CHILLAX DESTINATION, PHILIPPINES (PART 1)

Everyone wants to chill in one form or another. It may be a quick coffee respite or something planned like an out of town vacation. Our country has been blessed with so many majestic sights to behold. You won't believe how much money people from other continents spend just to see our breath-taking beaches. I guess it's only proper for us locals to see and appreciate these sights as well.
a
Puerto Princesa, Palawan
This is probably one of the most celebrated local destinations recently. It cradles the Underground River, a member of the New 7 Wonders of the World! I need to say this: PALAWAN IS SO CLEAN. A far fetched cry from the cosmopolitan cities up north. Sands are so fine. Waters in blue and green. Food served fresh. You'll definitely have your well deserved rest in this island. To know more about the top things you can do in this majestic wonderland, visit my TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN PALAWAN, HERE.

Bangui, Ilocos Norte
Alright, this may qualify as a THROWBACK THURSDAY picture, I know :) This was taken some years ago. We visited Bangui Windmills at Ilocos Norte. I've been there twice and both visits were equally fun. You can do interesting activities like sand surfing, ATV and many others. The place is not your usual beach and picture type of thing. I enjoyed the Pagudpud tour and stories about history too. Their empanadas are so yummmey!

Catch my entry at CNN iREPORT: EYE ON THE PHILIPPINES, May of last year, HERE.

Palace in the Sky, Tagaytay
You've seen one too many post of my Tagaytay trips but I'll say it again... Only a few kilometers from the city, the cool breeze of this sanctuary is waiting for you. Palace in the Sky is one of the structures built by the Marcos Administration. Though today the old palace looks a bit dilapidated, you can still enjoy the freshness of the whole facade. If you want to just think and de-clutter your mind, this is can be your resting place.

SCRIBBLED NOTES #16: TEN NUGGETS OF WISDOM FROM KING SOLOMON

1. ALWAYS LEARN.
♣ Learning involves effort, unlearning and adjustment to realities.
♣ Wars are won by planning and strategy.
♣ Learn from others. Listen more, talk less.

2. STRENGTH COMES FROM WISDOM.
♣ Real strength is not only physical, it is mental.
♣ Get advisers and apply their advices!
♣ Have a plan, and a timeline too.

3. FOOLS CANNOT APPRECIATE WISDOM.
♣ Never listen to fools.
♣ To avoid troubles, avoid fools.

 4. TIMES OF TROUBLE = TIMES OF FIRMNESS & PERSEVERANCE
♣ When things go seemingly bad, do not give up. Just hang in there.

♣ In marriage, project, business... ituloy mo kahit mahirap.
♣ At the end of the day, it's a consolation to say that it is NOT you who gave up.
♣ Do not give up in the middle of any difficulty.

5. RESCUE THOSE WHO ARE IN DANGER OF DYING.
♣ Literally and figuratively (i.e. don't crash hope and emotions).
♣ Life must be saved as much as possible.
♣ Dare to be always on a "giving" mode.

BEAUTY BUZZ : TOP 5 NATURE-LOVING PRODUCTS TO TRY

Loving our mother earth is one of the noblest things anyone can do. This mantra has trickled on different aspects of our lives. Whether eating green food, using paper bags and patronizing environmental loving goodies! This is a quick post. I have consolidated my:

TOP 5 NATURAL PRODUCTS WORTH TRYING

COOL MIST CITRONELLA ALCOSPRAY
For a measly Php 60, you now have a 60 ml shield from dengue and pesky insect bites. Citronella is a well known insect repellant. This comes handy specially on out of town trips. But, never underestimate its power. When you're walking in the park or open spaces, it's best to stay protected. I got this cutie from the Beauty Section of Landmark Makati.

HUMAN ♥ NATURE FEMININE WASH
This costs about Php 55, I recall. It has two variants. One in pink, the other in blue bottle. The pink one has a chamomile scent. It smells nice and clean. I guess that's what feminine wash is for ☺. One thing that draws me into it is its packaging. I am so having a hard time squeezing the heck out of pH care before. At last, there's a good and affordable fem wash!

CAMARU NATURALS AMAZON CLAY FACE MASK
SALADBOX introduced me to this new brand then. Recently, I got a message from Ruth of Camaru Naturals Team sharing that they have a newly concocted product. I got the package just today and will do my best to try and review this the soonest. If Camaru Naturals sounds familiar, it's because they were the manufacturer of a charcoal soap too (review HERE).

TOP 5 REASONS TO VISIT ECHO STORE & ECHO CAFE (SUSTAINABLE GREEN LIVING)

It was 2011 when someone handed me a green and white bottle. I've been told that it has a name - SPA IN A BOTTLE. First you rub some 2-3 squirts between your hands. Then, inhale deep (closing one's eye is an option). It was genius, to say the least.

Fast forward 2013, there's a huge boom of environmental friendly enterprises, one of which ECHO STORE is a pioneer! I managed to sneak in their Serendra store while I waited for my friends.

Their lighting was a soft, cozy one. Being a lover of white lights, I was a bit uncomfortable as I entered. However, the uneasiness dwindled away as I relaxed my shoulders a bit. In fairness, the lighting will put you in an "unhurried state", very nice! If you're wondering whether this green lover hub is worth a visit, read my:

TOP 5 REASONS TO VISIT ECHO STORE & ECHO CAFE (SUSTAINABLE GREEN LIVING)

Reason 1: Honest Herbs
In the sea of herbs and teas, how can we be sure which ones taste good and of good quality? I am not sure, honestly. What I know is the colors of these boxes are appealing. Banaba, Pandan, Lemon or Guyabano? You decide. Trivia: Owners shared that they know the farmers who make and assemble these majestic teas like from tree to tea bag. Did somebody just mention "personal touch"?

a
Reason 2: Unusual Coffee Beans
I haven't captured the entire collection just the ones I find interesting. Soy, Corn and Rice coffee?! Will the possibilities ever end? Well, if the costliest coffee comes from the digested poop of a cat specie, I would say the possibilities are endless. I heard that the company supports Filipino suppliers. What more can we ask for, people? It's goodness in every side.

Reason 3: Beauty Products? Check!
Add laundry and germicidal products too! They supply Messy Bessy products too! Messy Bessy is another Filipino homegrown business that specializes on natural household cleaning products. That's just one of the many brands Echo Store is carrying. I've seen Theo and Philo (artisan chocolate brand) too. Going back, their beauty products section is a one-stop haven for all of us. Helping the green campaign has never been so kilig! Yes! :)

MONEY MATTERS : WHAT'S YOUR GOAL? START YOUNG. ENJOY EARLY.

Do you want to wear this shirt? You bet I do! I want to retire young and travel the world! Before, I thought I can achieve this by:

♣ Working hard; and
♣ Saving my money in the bank. That's it.

Not until I realized that my 5-year old savings account earned a tiny 1% until now! But, what can I do? That's the only thing I know... saving in a bank!

Such a blessing that I've stumbled upon good reading materials and slowly, I delved into the world of investments. It's kinda big word for some, but trust me, it's not that intimidating :)

It was early this year that I've plotted some goals that I want to achieve. One of those is to earn a passive income (more HERE). Taking tiny steps, I read reviews about making good investments. Investing in Philippine Stock Market (PSEi) became a top priority. I've chosen the best online stock brokerage, by the name of COL Financial. How to open a COL account? Some steps HERE.

Among many other good points, I am magnetized on how the people behind the company put premium in financial literacy. They hold FREE seminars to equip you with basic know-hows. They made investing jargons somehow easy to understand. I always knew entrusting my investment money to them is a good move.

If you're one of the many who quips:
This is nice, but I'm too young to invest. Will worry about that some other time.
That's okay. At the end of the day, it is you who'll decide.
However, this young boy has something to share. Find out after the jump!

CMK SWEATS : ON FITNESS AND SOME LEARNING EXPERIENCE

It's not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. I can't help but to connect these words on being fit. I find it ultra-strange. People that are buff, lean and sexy seem to have "time" {big word} to be active and fit.

While some people (*cough, Tin, cough*) liberally proclaim that we don't have time to exercise.

Just recently, I've rekindled my commitment to faithfully do my fitness routine twice a week. And oh men, it's so difficult to get my butt off at the crack of dawn {I'm exaggerating} and get moving. However, here's a deal breaker. I've never felt so good after that muscle and fat wrenching workout. {insert Like A Boss face here!}.

Here are some additional tips just in case you find it handy:

♣ EASY ON THE NECK.
I had a stiff neck for the first time and that was ever so annoying. I blame it on my incorrect form while doing the stretch. After the workout, I find it so painful whenever I twist my neck to the right.

Lesson learned: Since nobody (not even your coach) can feel each tendon on your neck, best to ask him (or her) to go easy on your neck. For me, no neck stretch for now.

♣ MIND YOUR BODY FORM.
When doing any routine, we seem to prioritize the number of repetitions (reps) instead of checking if we have a correct form whilst doing each rep. I am one with the guilty party. The pang of "I-want-this-moment-to-pass-quickly!" gets in the way most of the time.

Lesson learned: Do your best to perform each exercise rep with a correct form. It will maximize each session and your target areas will be addressed effectively.
