CMK SHOPS : BOOK SHOPPING AT MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR 2014

It's been my third year of being a book fanatic at Manila International Book Fair (MIBF). It's such a happy place for that book lover, or okay, sometimes nerdy part of me. I didn't go overboard this year. Unlike last year where I got books more than I could read, I tried to keep it manageable.

For you to have a comparison, here's a book haul I've posted last MIBF 2013 (click HERE). As usual, I decided to drop by the fair at first day, first hour. Literally, the fair began at 10 am - I was there 10:20 am. I haven't had the chance to sip my morning coffee so I had my cup first at the nearest shop which is Cafe Bene. It was only then that I noticed that coffee shop is a Korean franchise pala. I ordered the classic and safest (cafe mocha), taste is okay. Good to know that there's a socket, so I charged my phone for a while.

That's a quick shot, for you guys. Regular cup costs Php 140 and that contains one espresso shot. I like the taste though I find it too milky. I want my cup more bitter than sweet.

Anyways, as a prelude to my haul this year, I opted to try new genres. Before, it's a majority of self help books and comics. This year, I tried other genres by which I was not too comfortable. But hey, that's the purpose of reading, isn't it? To expand your vocabulary and experiences.

TIP: There's a tiny entrance fee worth Php 20. SMX gates (ground floor, you won't miss it) are all open. All you have to do is pay and off you go. Don't forget to have your wrist stamped if you need to go out and get back again. There are comfort rooms and they're all easy to locate. After  this rather loooong introduction, here's my round up after the jump!

Why Men Marry Bitches. (Php 640) Ha! Not that I'm taking lessons from a b*tch, it's just that I'm curious on the author's writing style that's all. I find the book amusing and it reminds me of a book called He's Not That Into You, whether they are the same, I'm not sure at this point but I'll keep you posted.

Eat.Move.Sleep. (Php 600) and How Full is Your Bucket (Php 360)? are both promising for me. Have you heard of the book Strength Finder 2.0? Tom Rath is the author of all these 3 books. I think it's about time I flex my career muscles a bit. This is gonna be interesting! :) I got them all at Fully Booked Booth at 20% off the price tag.

NYX POWDER BLUSH IN PINCHED (DUPE FOR NARS ORGASM) REVIEW

I've been wanting to get a Nars blush for the longest time. Either their best-seller color which is Orgasm or their Laguna bronzer powder. However, I'm finding it too overrated at more or less, Php 1,500. I have other priorities, let's put it that way.

Next thing I know, I've been rummaging the web for a good dupe. And hands down, Mr. Google will give you these words when you look for Nars Orgasm dupe - NYX BLUSH PINCHED.

I saw a plethora of swatches and by golly the beauty bloggers have spoken! You can barely tell {if you can} the difference! So nice to know that NYX Philippines is here! :) I visited one at SM Makati and another at SM MOA. I've got a NYX Matte Lipstick in Temptress too, review HERE.

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
+ Pigmented. I'm the type who doesn't retouch makeups so after I applied them, I totally forget about it. Except for lipsticks which I occasionally swipe, as necessary.

+ Natural Looking. I guess that's the selling point of Nars to begin with. A blush without looking so barbie-ish. Nyx has achieved that. It's not too pink and the title said it all, it made you look like you've been pinched on the cheeks.

+ Pocket Friendly. I got them at 1/3 the price of NARS. It's Php 390. I've been told by my friends that you can get the same at a much lower price specially on online purchases, but if you like to try on the product first {like I do}, the price is not bad after all.

Thoughts, swatch and look after the jump.

GOLDEN FABOLOUS COCO MILK HOT OIL TREATMENT REVIEW

They say the feeling of finishing something is better than beginning the same. That's what I felt when I finally emptied the first tub of our product for today. I like trying new things, and the risk that comes along with it is the hit-and-miss part. I'm in the mood to test a new DIY hot oil product as I had my hair colored the past week. Tell you what, I'm on the verge of having my hair color darker in time for fall/winter season, but the little miss sunshine in me won again. So yes, it's still a beaming brown this time.

When I walk past the beauty department of SM, I spotted this one. I thought this was the conditioner my aunt uses way back '90s, it was too late when I recalled the name. The name of the classic conditioner is Swallow. Going back, I saw that this 150 gram tub retails for Php 99.00, but now it's on a buy-one-take-one promo.

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
My hair feels softer after lathering a generous amount of this. I like that it's fairly easy to rinse and I didn't have any massive hair fall whenever I use this. It's also practical, obviously, because a tub costs only Php 50 and it can last for a week or so. It's perfect for everyday use if you want to give your mane some TLC.

CMK WISHFUL THOUGHTS:
It doesn't deliver the hot oil finish I'm craving to have. The consistency is somehow watery and I doubt if there's a coconut element on the product for real. Sadly, the overall packaging doesn't help too. For one, they spelled "Fabolous" as Fabolouz (seriously?!). I also felt the need to reinforce the treatment with Dove Nourishing Oil Care (Review HERE) to compensate its lack of softening agent.

STIEFEL PHYSIOGEL HYPOALLERGENIC LOTION REVIEW (PLUS SOME TIPS)

Some weeks ago, you may have noticed a trending hash tag in twitter called #FREEINMYSKIN, that was brought about by Physiogel. As they put, "The Free in My Skin Movement aims to empower women to fully embrace and participate in life by freeing them from dry and sensitive skin, because having dry and sensitive skin can serve as a hindrance for women to fully function to their best abilities. This movement also aims to honor smart, strong, sensitive women who have faced their insecurities (physically and emotionally) and are now embracing and living life to the fullest."

Patti Grandidge (above) is the image model of the brand. She shared that due to different climates she has experienced (from her frequent travels), such took a toll on her skin, making her feel insecure. Good thing there's a brand that addressed this specific concern creating a more empowered and free women these days!

The team has sent over some samples for my review and it took me about a week to gather my thoughts and put it into blog post. First impression is the whole packaging is minimalist. It doesn't have any loud, colorful, play-with-words facade, only straight to the point shell that shows it's a hypoallergenic lotion and it makes skin less sensitive and dry. They put across the message spot on and I appreciate that.

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
One lather is all you need to see that it's not an ordinary lotion. When you apply it to your hands and legs, you'll notice that it gives you that smooth and soft texture in an instant. It's hard to explain but if you're that curious, you may want to try a tester on your favorite beauty department store near your place.

TIP: This is perfect specially if you're bound to visit another country in its fall/winter season. I've never appreciate the power of a lotion not until I was in Prague and my legs started to flake like crazy (!) At that moment, I rummaged the nearest beauty drug store and albeit its different translation, I thankfully grabbed some lotion to get me through the budding winter season.

CMK WISHFUL THOUGHTS:
It's a bit pricey compared to other lotions. A 100 ml retails for approx. Php 450. It took me quite some time to get use to it being odorless. I prefer lotions with hint of smell but I gather that most hypoallergenic lotions don't have any scent.

TIP: I've included this into my night time ritual! Before going to bed, I lather a generous scoop all over my hands and legs. It can feel a bit thick hence I prefer to have this on during bed time.

CMK EATS : RAMEN NAGI - SM MALL OF ASIA (SOME RAVES AND RANTS)

3. That is the number of times I've eaten a proper ramen as of publish date. First is from a hole in the wall eatery at Osaka, Japan (more slurps HERE), next is at Wrong Ramen (located at The Fort) and now at Ramen Nagi.

To me, a ramen is just a 'hyped and glorified mami ni Aling Maria'. Let's see if after my experiences this will change. To back track a bit, I've been seeing a growing number of people along Mall of Asia strip slurping over a hot bowl of ramen. It looks inviting and the spicy variant menu entices me all the more. "One day, I'll try and check you out" I monologued.

And last Wednesday was the day. It was the perfect opportunity since I've been to Manila International Book Fair 2014 all by myself (apologies to G as I totally forgot I promised to go with you, babawi ako).

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
Simple Menu. Believe it or not, they only have less than 7 dishes on their menu. Not complicated and straight to the point. | Very much like the authentic ramen. To be fair, I only ate one bowl of ramen in Japan but since it's not so long ago (went there last June 2014) I somehow recognize that old familiar broth-y taste ramen is known for. | Flavor Burst. If flavor is what you want, that is what you'll get! Since I've ordered Red King Akao (their spicy variant) I have to ask for a glass of water refill 4x! That's how intense it was.

CMK WISHFUL THOUGHTS:
Price. Okay, apologies if I may rant a bit. That big bowl you're looking at is dancing to the tune of Php 450! Of course I saw the price list even before I entered the resto but to be honest, the taste is nowhere near the quality of a close-to-Php 500 tab. | I got a stingy sensation on my tongue hours after eating. I am not sure if it's MSG but this I'm sure: my tongue still hurts. You know the feeling after eating a bowlful of junk food? Unfortunately, that's my tongue's FOTD (feeling of the day). Heheh. I've made up that acronym :) | I find the no-take-out policy quite weird. For a takaw-mata like yours truly, it's but normal to have take-aways, right? I get it, there are times it is a jologs thing to do, but to my mind, you paid for it so why prevent customers from taking out their purchase? Just a thought, though :)

KOJIE SAN SKIN LIGHTENING SOAP REVIEW (PLUS SOME PRODUCTS TO TRY)

Ever wondered what's the most viewed blog post in Call.Me.Kristine? I would have thought it has something to do with lipstick, how-to guide on money matters or even visa application write-up. All X. The undisputed number 1 post for years is my post on Belo Underarm Whitening Review. Makes me think that however we fight it, majority of the people {on this side of the planet} wants to be fair. If they are already, they want to be fair-er or yes, whiter.

I have my share of I-want-to-be-a-gluta-white-lady days, though it didn't get to the point where I had a Glutathione shot. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, I have considered that one too many times {hope mommy's not reading this} but I just had one major issue. I am afraid of needles O.o That said, I'll resort to another avenue.

Good thing there's a plethora of whitening soaps in the market. I rarely try them {yeah, I even haven't tried Belo yet} but there's one that caught my attention. Why? Because the idea came from a guy friend and the effect {on him} was noticeable. So, I tried.

What is it?
Kojie San Skin Lightening Soap. It has Kojic Acid Soap as its second name and it retails for Php 50. I got this from Watsons.

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS
It doesn't sting, but that's just me. I've heard from other beauty bloggers that they find it prickly. Maybe I'm more tolerant with the substance or maybe they let the soap on for an extended period of time.

It's affordable. Last time I check, one Gluta shot may cost Php 28,000 plus you have to worry about the needle (!) and side effects, so this is a perfect alternative. Label says you can use it on your body and face, bang for our buck indeed.
It works. Again, this is a personal reaction. Though I'm generally fair skinned, I noticed that the dark spots on my elbows and knees lighten. With consistent usage {which I lack, at the moment} - this product is really promising.

FASHION ALERT : INFINITY SCARF

Scarves are probably one of the most friendliest accessories you can bring when you travel. You can put it around your neck or use it as a blanket whilst on a plane. Not to mention it gives an extra oomph to your rather plain tees.

I do have this on-going love affair with scarves but it was my first time to go for a infinity scarf. It's those that are on a loop allowing you to wear the thing as a big, bulky necklace.

I bought this at Payless for Php 295. Very reasonable, isn't it? Since I always go for the classic brown cheetah prints, I decided to be different that day and go for the black and white combination. There's not much about it, really, just remember to partner this with a plain t-shirt, that's all :)

Here's my mug shot if you may:

I've been playing around with the look when the crazy nut in me decided to pull my hair to a bun and let my newly cut bangs on. In the picture, it looks like I had a pixie cut, but it's only an illusion, teehee.

Well, I think that's what I look like when I get a pixie cut! I bought the white t-shirt from London at Primark. It's a thrift store there much like Surplus Shop in the PH. I love how the scarf gives an overall attitude with the look.

No additional accessories necessary. For our fashion peg today, she's a sister of my ever favorite Katie Middleton, who's preggy with her 2nd royal baby! Yay.

I have a bright red coat in my closet but I don't have that camel brown boots. Hohumm... I like how sophisticated, as always, the Middletons are. Here's a snap after the jump!

MONEY MATTERS : HOW TO OPEN A PNB (HIGH DIVIDEND FUND) UITF ACCOUNT?

One Tuesday night, I had a small conversation with my mum and it went like this:

Tin: Ma, had you opened a mutual fund for me when I was little, the amount must have been so huge now! o.O
Mum: How was I to know?
Tin: You have a point!
*** End of Conversation ***

Mum's profession is engaged in a medical field, so that's understandable. This is one of the reasons why we need to educate our loved ones on how to make their money grow. I think the best {and most sincere} advices come from people who are close to you. Just make sure you trust that person's view. You know what I mean. Moving on, I have decided to diversify a bit more and opened my first PNB UITF.

WHY PHILIPPINE NATIONAL BANK (PNB)?
We know that PNB is not one of those banks who have loud TV commercials and print ads, add to the fact the buzz about the merger between Allied Bank and PNB last 2013. So, why did yours truly consider opening a Unit Investment Trust Fund (UITF) last week? After some research, I've been made aware that PNB's High Dividend Fund is on Top 2 spot as listed on August 2014 Performance of Philippine Equity UITF (Source). Also, PNB is close to 100 years. Plus, with their fundamentals, it's apparent that the bank is here to stay. With that, I think that's worth the risk #PersonalOpinionThough :)

HOW TO OPEN A PNB UITF ACCOUNT?
It's easy and the same as other banks if you happen to open UITFs previously.
 a
Step 1: Go to PNB personally.
My mum and I went to Makati Stock Exchange because she wants to redeem her mutual funds at ATR Kim Eng. That's a different story but feel free to read my related post HERE. She wants to realize the gains for something and she said she'll treat me for lunch. So, being a good daughter, off I went and accompany her. Haha :D
  a
Going back, there's a PNB Makati Branch in front of Makati Stock Exchange along Ayala Avenue, that's where I opened my account. They asked me to fill out some forms and asked for 2 pictures. They initially asked for a 1x1 but since I haven't had any, they got my 2x2 spare pictures instead.
 a
TIP: Make sure that you've signed all the relevant documents. It would be a pain to go back just because you forgot to sign one form.

ASIAN SECRETS LULUR INDONESIAN BODY SCRUB REVIEW

You make time for people {and things} you love. I've been reading a book called Stress Control and it's such a good read! Susan Balfour is an author based in United Kingdom. She's a psychotherapist who has made a special study of the stress syndrome {its cause and how to avoid them}. She emphasizes how smiling, exercising, social network detox and positive outlook can do wonders! Bought it from Powerbooks Greenbelt.

Do you know that taking a quick shower while you're grumpy can lessen your stiffness? Add a luxurious body scrub to that and you'll be a happy person the moment you step out of your bathroom. Enter: ASIAN SECRETS Lulur Body Scrub. This pot costs Php 140 and available in Watsons, Landmark and all leading beauty counters.

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
It's been a while since I've indulged in a full hour shower ritual. I'm glad I did. Lately, I've been exerting massive effort to wake up early and do yoga. Consequently, my unused muscles are crying for help. Lathering this sugary cream is a grand idea afterall!

I like that it smells nice. A bit flowery but just right. To apply: just scoop and scrub until you feel your dead skin cells are removed. It's also a good exfoliant, letting your brand new skin beam after rinsing. It also promises a whitening effect, when used over time.

Here's what my hands look like after scrubbing this magic:

NYX MATTE LIPSTICK IN MLS 25 TEMPTRESS REVIEW

Lipsticks. Tell it to a girl and her heart will skip a beat! Nude shades are def on my top list and for months, I've been on the look out for a perfect matte nude lipstick. You know that shade that it's nude but it's wearable. I'm looking for that translucent, don't-mess-with-me color on your lip type of thing. Thanks to the power of internet, I discovered that NYX is now in the Philippines! I'm such a late bloomer, I know right! :D

I got this piece (Php 390) from SM Makati. Much lower compared to MAC but they are very comparable if you'll ask me. They have a matte, creamy and buttery variant. And don't even bother asking how many colors are in, because they are so many! From bright red to fuschia pink to nude ones, they all have it. This is a girl's wonderland :)

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS
There's NYX at SM Makati and SM Mall of Asia. I fell in love with their matte collection in a jiffy. Geez! Every beauty blogger would rave on how pigmented Nyx colors are. It's long wearing and very much like MAC in so many ways. It glides perfectly on my lips and 2 swipes could last all day even after eating and drinking. Not to mention, price is super affordable. Compared to other drug store brands (like Revlon and Maybelline) NYX offer a superior quality with the same price range.

CMK WISHFUL THOUGHTS
Downside of this being pigmented is that it shows even a tiny chap on my lips. Better to moisturize first before applying the lippie. Another thing is that their packaging is so-so. Don't dare plop it to the floor or the lid might break o.O

Here's how the color looks like on my face. It made me look pale on camera but believe me, the color is much vivid in person!

CELESTY UV WHITE (SPF 50) BY SHINAGAWA REVIEW

Cleanse, tone and moisturize is just the start, we all should remember to protect our skin from sunlight's harsh effects. For some, taking good care of skin is an outright vanity, however I think it's more of being a good steward of our largest body organ {skin, that is}.

Last 2012, I've decided to undergo a LASIK Eye Procedure, making my eyesight 20/20 again. Thank GOD all went well. This is one of the most life-changing decisions I've made. Related Post HERE. How does it relate to our review for today? Well, Shinagawa, the Japanese establishment I've trusted for my lasik procedure, also has a skin care line. I picked a product called CELESTY UV WHITE. You know how Japanese brands take their formulation seriously, a reason why I'm excited to try this Sunblock!

CMK HAPPY THOUGHTS:
Substance is bordering transparent to translucent. It's odor-free and is absorbed by my skin quickly. Being SPF 50, it provides a more than sufficient coverage for your face. Do you know that even if you're indoors you still need to apply sunblock to minimize the possibility of having your skin burned? And that sun exposure is the number 1 reason for wrinkles and yes, even poor eyesight {from my discussion with one of Shinagawa doctors}. Another positive note is that the formula is gentle, I didn't experience breakouts even on my first few tries.

SOURCE

Among all the good points, my favorite part is how it emits a dewy finish after minutes of application. Please be warned of my bare face. That's the only product I applied so my face is kinda neutral and blank. See for yourself after the jump!

CMK TRAVELS : 10 PRACTICAL TIPS WHEN TRAVELING TO JAPAN (PART 1)

JAPAN - This is one country the 8-year old Kristine wanted to set foot on. And why not? This is where Hello Kitty lives (though I've heard she's not a cat) and when little Kristine grew up, she had her new inspiration to go to Japan - this is where Sinichi Kudo (aka Detective Conan) deduced all his famous murder cases. Fast forward some years down the road, tadaan! I've been to my dream land!

Japan is a beautiful country. It's a fusion of tradition and innovation. However, this is NOT one of those countries that you can simply fly and do your thing without any preparation. Language barrier can be very intense but don't worry, with these tips - I'm sure you'll have a grand time in the land of the rising sun.

TIP 1: GET A PORTABLE WIFI
And bring a smart phone or tablet with you. It's a necessity to have one. Let me repeat. It's a need not a want. Why? Because a) You need an English to Japanese translation when asking for anything, b) You need to access HyperDia to check train schedules and routes and deny it or not c) You need to post some pictures on social media sites #SelfieOnOsakaTower here we go!

How to get one? You can get this pocket wifi kit in the airport. Upon your arrival, you can choose which one to rent (3G or 4G). We got the 4G since there's not much of a price difference. It's costly, to be honest, prepare Php 3,000 approx for a 5-day rental. You can pay via credit card, just make sure you called your bank for a travel advisory before you left the PH.

TIP 2: FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE JAPANESE TOILET
This is such a nice challenge to have. Google company has a Japanese toilet in their headquarters, I've heard. What's the fuss about their toilet? Well, the fact that they have a bidet is just the start. You can choose what mode you want to use. Sprinkler? Straight shower? Dryer? Their tissues are soluble too! Meaning you can shoot used tissues on the bowl.

What's so cool about this thing? There's a button whereby the machine emits a growling sound. For what? Well if you have to fart so LOUD... no need to be shy because the sound will overpower your Kowabungga! butt sound. They've thought of everything! And I've never seen a country with such a sophisticated CR like Japan. Lastly, MOST toilets are like this. This can be one of their tourist attractions, seriously :D

TIP 3: APPRECIATE AUTHENTIC DISHES
By appreciate, I mean not having a bias on the way they cook their dishes. We have a way of cooking spaghetti, we like it sweet. Italians like it sour and tomato-ish. Same is true here, their Ramen is different and so is their take on Yakitori. But, diversity creates beauty in our world. I enjoyed the food trip, as always. I've published a separate post on this. See MUST TRY FOOD IN OSAKA JAPAN.

Tipid Tip: Bring a bottled water with you! Either buy one from 7-eleven or get your complimentary bottles from your hotel. You can save some monies and spend it on other fun stuff instead, think: desserts! Which leads me to my next tip.

SCRIBBLED NOTES #29: 8 WAYS TO COPE WHEN LIFE THROWS LEMONS AT YOU

Because sometimes life's a b*tch beach
To COPE is to master, tolerate, minimize stress or conflict. It involves effort to do just that. Here are some eight ways to cope when life's being a little "beach".

1. LAUGH. Just Because. More oxygen and relaxed muscles are good for health. Find humor in a difficult situation. Heal your wounds with cheerfulness. Watch comedy if you must. Talk to a friend na magaan kasama. 2. ELIMINATE the source of stress. Whenever you can, avoid people or situation causing you to frown. 3. PRAY instead of worrying. Do not worry, do what you can and for things beyond your control, lift it up to GOD. When you know how to worry, you know how to pray.

4. MANAGE your emotions. Hindi sinusunod lahat ng bugso ng damdamin. Like King David, accept peacefully what cannot be changed (David's reaction when his first born died). Breathe and say, "ganyan lang talaga yan..." "wala tayong magagawa..." after doing everything within your power.

5. FOCUS on what makes you feel good. Do not be anxious about anything, present your request to GOD with thanksgivng. Don't think of that which bothers you, control the directions of your thoughts. Empower yourself. Fortify yourself. Minimize fear.

6. SEEK / RECEIVE social support. Have friends. Have social groups. Have church ministries. When people live together, some sacrifices need to be done for the sake of harmony (i.e. there will be times when people bothers you, but isn't it amazing to know that you can 'bother' people too when you need them?)

CMK EATS : COLD STONE CREAMERY REVIEW (SM MALL OF ASIA)

I am trying so hard to resist this place whenever I pass by across BAYO at SM Mall of Asia, but one Sunday, the happy kid got the best of me. I gave in! And the unflattering shoulder shots on this picture didn't help. But, who cares? Ice cream is happiness!

Like Quiznos (Review HERE), the brand came from a foreign shore. Cold Stone Creamery is an American-based ice cream parlor chain. They have a wide array of ice cream choices, from sundaes, parfaits, and yes, ice cream cakes! Here are my reco's on this sweet shop.

CMK SWEATS : WHAT MY DAY LOOKS LIKE

It's easy to take for granted things that are always there. We act as though they will be there forever. Be it a person, or a routine - we, humans, have a tendency to forget. We forget that we should appreciate things because, like everything, they are fleeting. Here today, maybe gone tomorrow. I know for a fact that I may not be doing these things pretty soon and so I thought I'll blog my usual day as something to go back months from now.

♥ Practiced Yoga. Reason is simple. I overate last weekend. Ha! I got a chocolate mousse and almond coffee on a Friday. Got a Nono chocolate cake from Classic Confections {shared with friends} last Saturday. And Coldstone Ice Cream last Sunday. The only logical thing to do is to repent and sweat them away today!

However, I'm glad to report that I'm improving. I noticed that I'm more pliant and flexible than before. Hehe! Another good by-product is whenever I practice, I'm obliged to wake up early to make it at 8:30 am! In retrospect, I've accomplished more tasks today! Hooray!

♥ Got my legs cold-waxed. As they are already overdue. Like my hair color. I love the feeling of smooth legs. Plus, I can wear skirts and shorts again without the hassle of hiding unwanted hair. Geez, to be a girl sometimes is both fun + hard work.

♥ Sent my documents to COL Financial. Remember my action items on my blog post HERE? Well, this is the execution part. Fee to ship documents to Manila is Php 100 via LBC. I've heard that Air 21 is cheaper, so feel free to check.
